Associate Data Scientist

Position summary:

This individual will provide expertise to acquire, manage, manipulate, and analyze data and report results using the Sentry analytics software suite or underlying data repositories. The ideal candidate will enjoy working with both technical staff and client hospitals on projects that address key business challenges and deliver tangible financial outcomes.

Position description:

  • Perform structured and exploratory data analysis using data from disparate sources to identify value-added opportunities to improve operational efficiency, data integrity, and financial performance of clients
  • Support the department in the execution of complex research and analytics projects
  • Identify and stratify opportunity areas for clients and conduct research to help determine root causes as well as the best course of action to improve quality, efficiency, data integrity, and/or profitability
  • Analyze data sets or reports for data discrepancies and other errors; analyzes data issues to determine root causes and recommend actions steps to resolve them
  • Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets.
  • Communicate informed conclusions and recommendations to Sentry leadership and clients
  • In collaboration with others, develop and maintain databases and data systems necessary for projects and department functions
  • Acquire and abstract primary or secondary data from existing internal or external data sources
  • In collaboration with others, develop and implement data collection systems and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and data quality
  • Execute on functional and analytic assessment and project requirements:
    • Conduct quantitative and qualitative interviews
    • Perform departmental shadowing and observations
    • Perform process, data, and financial analysis
    • Provide guidance for establishing process, staffing, and system improvements
  • Follows/maintains consulting and analytic standards, considerations, methodologies, and controls
  • In collaboration with others, interpret data and develop recommendations based on findings
  • Develop graphs, reports, and presentations of project results
  • Perform basic statistical analyses for projects and reports
  • Generate routine and ad hoc reports

Qualification / requirements:

  • Bachelor’s (required) or Master’s (preferred) in business, economics, information management, healthcare information, computing, mathematics, statistics, or equivalent combination of related experience
  • 4+ years of experience (Bachelor’s degree), or 2+ years of experience (Master’s degree), in a data science, data analyst, decision support, consulting or other relevant role
  • Advanced SQL skills required
  • Experience in core analytics methods preferred, including statistics, predictive modeling, and machine learning
  • Data-mining skills using Python or R
  • Possesses strong MS Excel skills
  • Basic understanding of healthcare data (clinical and financial) and operations (pharmacy, revenue cycle, supply chain, etc.) preferred
  • Aptitude for rapidly integrating process improvement and subject matter expertise
  • Fast learner, able to understand new products/features and business objectives quickly
  • Ability to establish and maintain professional working relationships with all levels of staff and clients
  • Adept at building productive cross-departmental relationships
  • Ability to work with minimal daily supervision
  • Willingness to be part of a team-unit and cooperate in the accomplishment of departmental goals and objectives
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • This position requires up to 20% travel outside the local area and overnight
